Minnesota Lawyer magazine recently recognized one of the firm’s founders, Sonia Miller-Van Oort, as a 2025 Attorney of the Year. Sonia received this award as a result of her lead role in obtaining a $1.6 million settlement from Hennepin County for her client in a contract and whistleblower lawsuit after three years of litigation and two successful appeals. This unprecedented settlement was the largest settlement paid by Hennepin County in a non-death related lawsuit.

The awards ceremony, which honored Sonia and other award recipients, was held on February 5, 2026. Sonia’s colleagues, friends, family, and clients attended the ceremony to celebrate Sonia’s achievement and acceptance of the award.

The Minnesota Lawyer award recognizes attorneys who have had a notable impact on the Minnesota legal community over the last year or longer. This was Sonia’s second time receiving an Attorney of the Year award. This was the third time a Sapientia attorney has received this award.
